My Journey
In 1998 I matriculated from Grey College, Bloemfontein. The following year I enrolled at the University of the Free State to study Physiotherapy.
I continued my keen interest in sport whilst at university and in 2000 made my debut for the Free State Cricket team.
Although I found that playing cricket and studying at the same time was “challenging”… I ultimately graduated in 2004 and completed my Community Service a year later. Whilst practicing as a community service physio – I experienced many “real life” events which theory and books just cannot teach one.
This period of my career was definitely an eye opener for me – having left university and the structure of lecture halls.
I lived and survived throughout that year by my credo of “improvisation and adaptation…” I quickly learnt that there is nothing better to prepare one as a recently graduate – than facing the structured chaos of the “real world” of physiotherapy.
As a result of my cricket skills I was fortunate enough to find an initial employment opportunity as a cricketer – which also allowed me to practice physiotherapy as a locum in Bloemfontein, ensuring that I remained in touch with my real passion of physiotherapy. I fully realized that cricket was not going to sustain me for too long as I progressed through life.
During the 2006/07 cricket season, I relocated from Bloemfontein to Potchefstroom, where I immediately started working in a local physiotherapy practice.
My sporting appetite for cricket continued and before long I was selected as the captain of the North West Dragons Cricket team. I have grown very fond of this team and I still represent them when I am not playing for the Bizhub Highveld Lions.
After working as a physio in Potchefstroom for approximately two years, I became an associate for a period – however my cricketing successes continued and the demands to attend cricket practice for the Bizhub Highveld Lions in Johannesburg increased. As such I decided to relocate to the big city.
Since moving to my new home in Johannesburg, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to one of the best physiotherapists in the business.
Under his guidance, I was given the opportunity to manage one of their school satellite practices for four years, where I gained invaluable experience in the field of treating sports physio conditions.
One of my career highlights was certainly to oversee the annual Easter Rugby Festival in Johannesburg.
When I was at school playing rugby, we had “Deep Heat” available plus water and a quarter of an orange at half time, whereas NOW school rugby teams have the option of calling upon a professional physiotherapist if necessary.
How things have changed!
The best thing about the orange slice at half time by the way, was the peel doubling up as a mouth guard in the second half!
2013 has arrived and I have decided that it is perfect timing to take a leap of faith towards realizing my ultimate career dream!
My experience in the professional sporting world & the valuable physio skills and experience built up over the last decade, has given me the confidence to establish my very own physio practice here in Johannesburg…
So, here I am!
